Eric ‘Cayenne’ Butler

Eric Butler brings a wealth of musical diversity and
experience to every project he gets involved with.
Born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in neighboring
East Orange, Eric was in a culturally rich environment with the likes of
artist such as Dionne Warwick, Sara Vaughn, Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra,
Wayne Shorter, Little Jimmy Scott, Kool and The Gang, and Whitney
Houston.
Choosing to make music his profession he attended
Boston, Massachusetts prestigious Berklee College of Music with
composition, arranging, and orchestration as his major. During his
college years he performed as lead vocalist, arranging, and
orchestrating his compositions for the Annual Music Educators of
Massachusetts Conference, receiving recognition in the world renowned “Down
Beat” (jazz magazine) for his exciting performances. He also gigged
on trumpet with a number of established recording artist Gladys Knight
and The Pips, Lou Rawls, The Dells, and Stevie Wonder, naming only a
few. Since then, Butler has amassed an impressive list of credits in
many different areas of entertainment.
As composer he composed and orchestrated the themes
and underscore for the feature film titled “The Gifted” starring
Dick Anthony Williams, “The Club”, starring Tommy Ford, NBC-TV network
syndicated series; “Images and Realities”, episodes “African
American Men”, “The African American Family”, and “African
American Women”; hosted by Louis Gossett Jr.; Danny Glover and Ester
Rolle; Vanessa Williams, Queen LaTiffa and poet Maya Angelou
respectively. His pen also created the theme for the weekly TV series “ABF-America’s
Black Forum”, hosted by Julian Bond.
His compositions, arrangements, and orchestrations
have contributed to “The Tonight Show”, hosted by Johnny Carson;
Lou Rawls - “UNCF Parade of Stars”; Fox Television’s broadcast of
“The 1992 U.S. Olympic Festival”, and the TV series “Fame”.
Additionally, he was responsible for the acclaimed dance, vocal and
choral arrangements, and orchestrations for “The Martin Luther King
Kennedy Center Special” production number “For All We Know Medley”,
choreographed by “Dream Girls”/Michael Jackson‘s choreographer, Michael
Peters, with a featured performance by Michael Peters and Fame’s/Academy
Awards choreographer Debbie Allen. Eric also wrote the choir
arrangements for Pattie Labelle on the Frank Sinatra TV special; “Sinatra-80
Years My Way” and choir arrangements for the Doobie Brothers 2000
tour.
In the Recording Industry Eric’s songs have been
recorded by Robert Guillaume, Leslie Drayton, Vivian Reed, Eddie
Kendricks, Patrice Rushen, and Nancy Wilson. Other recording artist that
have commissioned him to arrange and orchestrate their CD/Album
productions include gospel artist Daryl Coley (“He’s Right On Time”);
Debarge (“The Debarges”); Phyllis Hyman (“To Sleep On It”);
Robert Guillaume (“To Love Again”); and The Temptations reunion
album (“Power”). Additional orchestrations for CD’s include “The
Road To El Dorado” by Elton John for Dreamworks animation feature
film and soundtrack of the same title, plus “The Young Americans“,
produced by Quincy Jones, and Luis Miguel’s 2000 CD on Lions
Records.
In the Musical Theatre world he set the tone as
Musical Conductor for the world premiere of “Ray Charles Live... The
Musical”, for the Pasadena Playhouse. He has arranged, orchestrated,
composed and given musical direction as ‘Music Director’ to numerous
other productions, some of which are “Viva La Vida Frida Kahlo”,
“Stormy Weather The Lena Horne Story”, “Hips, Lips &
Fingertips” starring Loretta Devine,” “Duke’s Place”
(Milwaukee repertory Company), “De Obeah Mon”, and “Four
Seasons” (playwright C. Bernard Jackson) for which Eric received the
Los Angeles Drama Log Award for ‘Best Musical Direction‘.
Other theatre productions he’s orchestrated and transcribed music for
include the 2002 production of Off-Broadway’s “Thunder Knocking On
The Door” starring Leslie Uggums; Off-Broadway’s “On Toby Time”;
Broadway’s “Your Arm’s To Short To Box With God”, and the
National Company of “Don’t Bother MeI Can’t Cope” as Musical
Director.
Eric has arranged and orchestrated for the Los
Angeles Symphony Orchestra, Pop Concert season, the Denver Symphony
Orchestra, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, featuring Grammy Award
Winning artist Marilyn McCoo. He’s provided Tony Award winners, Hinton
Battle, Ken Page, and choreographer, Michael Peters, with arrangements
and music direction for their live concerts, in addition too doing the
same for Eddie Kendricks’ Arista Records solo album and tour, (the
Temptations legendary tenor voice of “Just My Imagination”). Once
again in showing his diversity, he was the Music Director, Arranger and
Orchestrator of the Mc Donald’s Gospelfest, held at Los Angeles’ famous
Shrine Theatre for five consecutive years, guiding more than thirty
choirs and celebrity guest artist such as; Shirley Caesar, Pat Harvey,
Glen Turman, Marilyn McCoo, the Clark Sisters, Rance Allen, Walter
Hawkins, and the Clara Ward Singers.
Never losing his passion to sing, Eric’s voice has
contributed to many recording artist CD’s, film scores and soundtracks,
some of which are American Idol’s, Clay Aiken and Fantasia, Kenny
Loggins, Rod Stewart, Andy Gibb, Ray Charles, and Michael Jackson, with
films such as; “Happy Feet”, “Amistad”, “Waiting To Exhale”,
“How Stella Got Her Groove Back”, “Ace Ventura 2;When Nature
Calls”, “Rosewood ”, “Get Bruce”, “The Preacher‘s
Wife”, “Get On The Bus”, and “A Civil Action”,
to name just a few.
Composing and writing songs constantly, Eric has
accumulated over 300 songs in his Aw-Love-It Music Publishing Company
catalogue ranging in styles from R‘n B, Pop, Jazz, Country, Hip-Hop to
Rock, and Cinema driven Themes, creating new material all the time.
Eric is a member of the American Federation of
Musicians, AFTRA, SAG, and the American Society of Composers & Authors,
and is bi-coastal between Los Angeles, California and New York, New
York.
